About Dr. Atwood
Dr. Atwood was born in south Mississippi, about 100 miles north of New Orleans. He attended North Pike County High School where he was valedictorian. He attended the United States Air Force Academy majoring in Life Sciences, but was one of the few selected to attend medical school. Dr. Atwood graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical School in 1977 and went directly into active duty, serving a 5 year residency in general surgery.Dr. Atwood was transferred overseas with the Air Force and was stationed at Lajes Field, the Azores. While there he served as Chief of Surgery as well as Chief of Hospital Services. His tour was shortened as he was selected to continue his training in Plastic Surgery. He was transferred to San Antonio, TX, where he completed his residency in Plastic Surgery at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in 1985.
Dr. Atwood was then transferred to California where he served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at David Grant USAF Medical Center. While there he presided as Chairman of the CranioFacial Anomalies Board and also instructed residents in the surgery training program.
In 1987 he moved to Fayetteville, AR where he has maintained a busy practice which has included serving as past President of the Arkansas Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He continues to mentor medical students and residents.
Dr. Atwood was certified by the American Board of Surgeons in 1984, but he is currently certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, achieving this goal at the earliest possible date in 1987, following completion of his residency. He is currently a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, and the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He has privileges at most Northwest Arkansas Hospitals including Northwest Health Facilities, Mercy Health, Physicians’ Specialty Hospital, and is on active staff with Washington Regional Medical Center. He is married to his wife of 37 years and together they have 4 children, and currently 4 grandchildren.
