Choosing the right implant is one of the most significant ways patients can ensure the success of their surgery. We are here to help you make the best choice.

Silicone vs. Saline Implants

One of the first decisions patients should make when choosing their implants is whether they want silicone or saline. Dr. Atwood will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each during your consultation.

Saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution after they are inserted into the breast. Silicone implants are pre-filled, and therefore require a larger incision. However, many patients believe these implants feel more like natural breast tissue. Dr. Atwood will allow patients to hold each type of implant in their hand to get a sense of how the implant will feel after placement.

Gummy bear implants are a type of silicone implant that is form-stable. In other words, like its candy namesake, it is pliable yet cohesive. These implants are ergonomically shaped, making them a popular choice among those who wish to undergo breast reconstruction and have minimal breast tissue.

Dr. Atwood has over two decades of experience in investigating the advantages of disadvantages of each implant option to help patients make informed decisions.

It is important to understand that in the event of a rupture, each type of implant will require different attention. If a saline implant ruptures, the solution is harmlessly absorbed by the body, and the remaining silicone shell is either removed or replaced. If a silicone implant ruptures, it requires a more involved surgery to remove the silicone filling. Gummy bear implants will not leak, but will require removal or replacement.

Fat Grafting

In addition to breast implants, Dr. Atwood can further augment the breasts with a patient's own fatty tissue extracted during a liposuction procedure. This option can provide additional refinements that many patients find provide results with an even more natural look and feel. If you wish to eliminate excess fatty tissue and enhance the size and shape of your breasts, this option may be recommended.

Implant Dimensions

In addition to choosing between saline, silicone, or cohesive silicone implants, you must also choose the right size and shape. Saline and silicone implants can be round or teardrop-shaped. The disadvantage of choosing a teardrop-shaped implant is that if the implant shifts, it can disrupt the outward appearance of the breast.

Implants are available in sizes ranging from 100 to 1000 cubic centimeters. Dr. Atwood will help you choose the right size based on your goals, your frame, and the amount of natural breast tissue you have.
