Common Reasons for Breast Implant Removal

There are several reasons why women may wish to undergo breast implant removal. We will explore some of the most common reasons in the following sections.

Sagging Breasts

Weight fluctuations and the aging process can lead to sagging breasts. If you have breast implants, the natural pull of gravity can contribute to this issue. Dr. Atwood can remove your implants and perform a breast lift to help you achieve a curvier bust line.

Unsatisfactory Size

Choosing the right implant size is one of the most important factors of breast augmentation. Women who feel that their breasts are too large following augmentation may choose to have the implant removed and replaced with a smaller implant. Of course, revisional breast surgery can also help those who wish to enlarge their breast size even further.

Breast Implant Rupture

Though breast implants are crafted from high-quality materials, it is still possible for them to rupture. Should this occur, the implants will need to be removed. If a silicone implant ruptures, it can lead to inflammation of the surrounding tissues. As a result, patients will need to fully recover before implant replacement can be performed.

Surgical Complications

Certain post-surgical complications can require breast implant removal. For example, if you experience capsular contracture, implant shifting, or breast dysmorphia, then breast implant removal will likely be recommended.

The Breast Implant Procedure

To perform breast implant removal, Dr. Atwood will create small incisions, usually in the natural crease of the breasts. To minimize scarring, the new incisions will be placed in the same location as the original sites. Once access has been made, the implants will be carefully removed through the incisions. For your comfort, this procedure is performed under general anesthesia. In most cases, breast implant removal can be completed in about one to two hours.

What to Expect after Breast Implant Removal

Following breast implant removal, it is normal to feel tired and sore for a few days. Pain and discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications. You will be provided with a comprehensive list of post-surgical guidelines. It is important to follow these instructions closely to ensure a successful and comfortable recovery.

You should minimize activity and rest as much as possible for the first few days. Generally, light activities can be resumed after about one week. Though each patient is unique, most women will feel back to normal after about two weeks. Typically, patients will need to wait about three weeks before participating in cardio or workout routines. Be sure to ask Dr. Atwood when you can be cleared for these activities.
